On the San Lorenzo River Lounging outing a while back, I noticed a suspicious character scuttling across the riverbottom. Turns out it was a Chinese mitten crab -- an invader which is known to infest the Bay and Delta, but this was the first sighting outside that area.
I've had a request for specimens, so grab your shorts and Tevas and let's go search! (This would be a great activity for kids, too!) Bring clothes appropriate for wading; also lunch & liquids. A towel might be good, too. We'll hike about a mile in on an easy trail, and then hit the river. If there's a large turnout, perhaps splinter groups could search upstream & downstream of the prime target. Sorry, kids, you can't keep 'em as pets -- they get popped in specimen bottles & sent off to Berkeley.
We'll be back in plenty of time to get to the Halloween party (or, as may be, the Broceliande concert). Meet at carpool point #8.
